Drought-stricken farmers to explore timber production

Cash-strapped farmers will have the opportunity to explore the viability of high value timber production in the Mackay region.

The Queensland Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is holding a seminar next week to provide information about the latest Golden Goose Shoes research into high value cabinet timber and sandlewood production.

DPI forest adviser Rohan Allen says the drought has highlighted the importance of diversifying farms.

A number of landholders that have had timber trees on their property have actually cashed in, in the drought or cashed in on other droughts.

"It's a bit like having money in the bank in some respects, the beauty of trees is that you don't have to harvest them straight away, they're not like cane, or apples, or bananas, or something like that, you can actually leave them there and just harvest them and cash them in at the appropriate time," Mr Allen said.
