Distance running was revered because it was indispensable. Michael Finley Jersey . It was the way we survived and thrived and spread across the planet. You ran to eat and to avoid being eaten; you ran to find a mate and impress her, and with her you ran off to start a new life together. You had to love running, or you wouldnt live to love anything else. - Christopher McDougall in Born To RunBy the time the mens marathon was staged in Rio, on the last day of the Olympics as per tradition, the average Indian fan had switched off. It was the first time since Rome 1960 that India had three in the field, though, for Thonakal Gopi - one among Indias three male marathoners in Rio, it didnt matter that his event wasnt among the most closely followed in the country. He was living a dream.Being at the Olympics was an incredible experience, he says, The target I had set myself was to breach the 2:12 national record. The record was set by Shivnath Singh in Jalandhar way back in 1978.Clocking his personal best, Gopi finished a second shy of compatriot Kheta Ram, at 2:15:26 in 26th position in a field of 155 marathoners in Rio. Nitendra Rawat, the more accomplished marathon runner of the three, finished 84th. Gopi, though isnt new to pulling off surprises. His Olympic qualification itself was a huge surprise considering the marathon was never an event he trained for or competed in.At the Mumbai marathon earlier this year, Gopi, who had never before participated in a full marathon, was brought in as a pace-setter for Rawat. He was supposed to drop out after 30 kms. He didnt. And it paid off.Finishing 37 seconds behind Rawat at 2:16:15, Gopi, primarily a 10000m athlete, wore a look of disbelief when he learnt that he had qualified for the marathon event in Rio. I never imagined that I would compete in a full marathon and qualify for the Olympics, says Gopi, who names Mo Farah among his idols, I hadnt even trained for it. Maybe the intensity and continuity I put in my training for 10000m helped.42.1 kms or 26.2 miles, the distance covered at a marathon, is probably one that most of us take 21 days to complete given we walk/jog at least 2kms daily. The ability to judge pace-setting is one of the most crucial tactics in a marathon. Running too slow at the start to save up on energy may result in not being able to inject a quick burst of speed so as to take the lead. While a thrust on speed early on could mean losing advantage and steam towards the finish.Right through the run I was thinking of the 2:12 record and how I would have to cover a km in 3.8s to touch that mark, he says, Its obviously not feasible to maintain that timing in every km. After a certain point in the marathon your mind begins feeling unsettled, your body fatigued and your muscles begin to get tight. I felt I was losing control over my arms and feet and moved my arms back and forth swiftly to try to regain command.Gopi was clearly in the lead among the Indians for the larger part of the race. Completing the 30km mark in 1:34:59, the Kerala runner moved into 39th position. Kheta and Rawat were at 52nd and 93rd respectively. In the next five km stretch, Kheta jumped a few places to be placed at 37th, with Gopi three places ahead of him. Soon enough the pair in the identical blue jerseys were racing alongside each other. Only after I crossed 33 kms did I notice that Kheta was right behind me, says Gopi, His presence worked as a support for me. I told myself OK, now for the rest of the race I can go alongside him.The 28 year-old admits though that he wasnt too happy with the scheduling of the event in Rio. A 9:30 am start meant that you finish around afternoon when the heat is at its worst. Luckily during our event there were light showers but during the womens marathon, it was scorching. My coach was there at the station to ensure everything was in place.?Ahead of the Olympics, a ten-month training stint at a high-altitude Ooty facility was coach Surendra Singh Bhandaris way of preparing his wards, Gopi, Kheta and Rawat, for the rigours of a road race. Training at a high altitude helps increase your heart and lung capacity, says Bhandari, who serves as an athletics coach at the Army Institute of Sports in Pune. The main focus has been on endurance and we divide our sessions into basic, preparatory and specific, bringing in speed training four weeks before the competition. Our usual sessions are of three hours in the morning and two in the evening and touch 300km a week during endurance training. Gopi is still new to marathon and his threshold for holding his body together during a race will only get better with increased endurance training. In speed training, Bhandari goes on to fill us in, the idea is to lessen the number of kilometres covered in the weeks preceding the event. Starting with 120-130 kms four weeks before the event, its tapered down to 40-50 km and lesser progressively with the sole thrust on speed.?After 30 kms, my hamstring and calves were hurting. Thats how I slowed down towards the end, says Gopi, Also in the final 3kms the road had a tiled feel to it and since there was a light drizzle it was slippery.Fatigue, cramps and hamstring pulls can be delayed with increased training, says Bhandari, even if not entirely averted. As opposed to a 100m sprint which lasts no more than 10 seconds, its essence lying in speed and its nature being almost entirely anaerobic, in a marathon, which typically spans over two hours, the body uses up its last reserves of energy. An extreme and lonely sport, marathon pushes your mind and body to the edge. The carbohydrate and fat reserves are used up 90 minutes into the race, he says, That explains why cramps set in post the 30 km mark. The body then begins to convert protein into energy. With more endurance training the onset of fatigue can be delayed, bit by bit. We have to push it to 42 km.Hailing from the town of Suthan Bathery, in Wayanad, Kerala, situated at an altitude of 1000m above sea level, Gopi, whose farmer parents alternately grew rice and ginger on their patch of land to bring food on the table, always had an innate love for running. I was into running right from my school years, he says. While I was in college I tried my hand at half marathon too. I just drove it well, drove it in the fairway for the most part, and I just holed a couple putts early. Thats kind of been the difference maker for me -- the putter. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. Doug Christie Jersey . -- The record book shows Aric Almirola had one career Xfinity Series victory before Friday nights win at Daytona International Speedway. He never counted that win, at Milwaukee in 2007, refused to take the trophy and thought it was a black mark on his record all these years. Now he has a real win to his name.Almirola was declared the winner of Friday nights race in which NASCAR determined he was the leader when the caution flag froze the field shortly before the finish line. It was technically the second win of his career, but he said he doesnt accept the first win because he was replaced midway through that race by Denny Hamlin, and it was Hamlin who drove the car to victory lane. For me, this is my first Xfinity win, Almirola said. I know I have a win, but theres always been an asterisk next to it. I hated the fact that I got credit for that. I did not like that. I didnt take the trophy when they called me the winner. I didnt take any of the credit all along.I didnt feel like I deserved to win that race because I wasnt in the car when that race was over. But tonight I was. Tonight, we went to Victory Lane and Im here and I was in the car. So this is my first Xfinity win.Almirola now has wins in all three of NASCARs national series. He celebrated this latest victory, the first since he won a rain-shortened Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona in 2014, by taking the checkered flag and running alongside his Ford Mustang as it was pushed to Victory Lane. He was met there by his young son, who pouted earlier in the day, when he had to leave the playground but was promised his dad would win a trophy if he went inside and ate his dinner.I told him that if he came in and ate his dinner, that Daddy was going to go race in the Xfinity race and we were going to get a trophy tonight. And we got a trophy! Almirola said as his son, Alex, high-fived him.The race had already been sent to a two-lap overtime shootout when a multi-car accident on the backstretch clouded the final running order. A four-car pack led by Almirola and Justin Allgaier hurtled toward the finish, but NASCAR had to freeze the field because of the accident that happened behind them.I knew it was close. I knew it was really close, he said. I knew they wrecked behind us. I was like, When are they going to throw the caution? I knew I was in front of him.The cars were brought down pit road as NASCAR reviewed the running order, and Tampa native Almirola was given the win.Allgaier, in a Chevrolet, had thought he was the winner until NASCAR made the call for Almirola.I guess it just depends on what replay you look at, he said. We definitely had the momentum down the back there. ... When you lose them by that little bit, it definitely is frustrating. When you can be disappointed with second, though, its still a good day. Before the overtime finish, NASCAR said Darrell Wallace Jr. did not maintain speed and forced him to swap positions with Allgaier before the race went green. He finished 20th and took to Twitter to blast NASCARs race control.Got the muppets up there officiating tonight! he wrote. Never know how to react under pressure. ... Whatta joke.Ryan Sieg finished third and Joey Logano was fourth.Brendan Gaughan was fifth and followed by Ryan Reed, Jeff Green and Spencer Gallagher. Chase Elliott and Erik Jones completed the top 10.The finish was reminiscent of the May race at Talladega, where Elliott Sadler and Brennan Poole both waited in their cars at the finish line for NASCAR to declare the winner. It went to Sadler, who had a shot to win Friday night until the race went to overtime and he had to stop for gas. Tom Van Arsdale Jersey . That leaves Bell and Zach Zenner as the Lions only healthy running backs on the roster.Even though Bell is joining the team so late in the year, he did play for offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter last season in a similar offense. Its coming back to me and the more I look at stuff and Im like, `Oh, OK. I remember that, Bell said. When I go out there, Ill be able to play comfortably and I wont have to think as much.Bell insisted he wasnt surprised when the Lions new general manager, Bob Quinn, released him less than a year after he signed a two-year deal with former GM Martin Mayhew. In fact, Bell said he kept in touch with Quinn before and after Chicago signed him earlier this season. He had three carries for 6 yards on Oct. 2, when the Bears beat the Lions, and didnt run the ball once over the next three games before being cut. When I left the Bears, I texted (Quinn) back and said, `Bring me home, Bell recalled. He sent me a text the other day and said, `Do you want to come home? I said, `Yeah. My heart has never left here. My family is here. I played most of his career and built my foundation here.Bell, who is from Benton Harbor, Michigan, won the Harlon Hill Trophy as the NCAA Division II Player of the Year in 2009 at Wayne State, but that wasnt enough to get him drafted. After playing sparingly for Indianapolis and Philadelphia, he did enough well as a runner and receiver with the Lions to sign a $9.3 million, three-year contract in 2014.We certainly know what his traits are, Detroit coach Jim Caldwell said. Hes always been a very, very positive guy. A very, very good locker-room guy. Lot of energy. Loves to play the game. And hes a good, tough runner as well. Hes alright with the ball in his hands throwing it to him, also. There a number of different things that he can do.And soon, Bell will add another accomplishment to his resume when he walks across a stage in front of a crowd he is proud to say will include his 11-year-old son, Jordan.I always preach to the kids that Im trying to mentor, or kids that come to my camp, how important education is, he said. Definitions of what constitutes unfair bowling should be clarified by crickets lawmakers, the New South Wales coronial inquest into the death of Phillip Hughes has heard on an emotion-charged final day. Wholesale Jerseys 2022 .Counsel assisting the coroner, Kristina Stern SC, submitted that the inquest should conclude that this was a case of accidental death, which was not made more likely by the nature of play on the day of the Sheffield Shield match at the SCG. Hughes was struck in the side of the neck on day one of the match, November 25, 2014, suffering an arterial injury that resulted in his death at St Vincents Hospital two days later. However both Stern and Greg Melick SC, for the Hughes family, recommended that the wording of the laws around unfair bowling should be examined in light of the episode, citing earlier testimony from former umpire and ICC umpires training manager Simon Taufel. Law 42.2.1 of Sheffield Shield playing conditions, adapted from the MCCs laws of cricket, states as follows:A bowler shall be limited to two fast short pitched deliveries per over. A fast short pitched delivery is defined as a ball, which after pitching, passes or would have passed above the shoulder height of the striker standing upright at the crease. The umpire at the bowlers end shall advise the bowler and the batsman on strike when each fast short-pitched delivery has been bowled. Following his own independent analysis, Taufel had told the inquest that of 23 short balls bowled on the day, 20 had been directed at Hughes. However he also submitted that many of these deliveries did not meet the definition of a fast short-pitched delivery because they would not have passed Hughes above shoulder height. The gulf between Hughes family and Cricket Australia was starkly illustrated when his father Greg, mother Virginia and sister Megan all left the courtroom in the midst of CA counsel Bruce Hodgkinsons final submissions, leaving his brother Jason to audibly register his incredulity at proceedings.Hodgkinson had recommended to the coroner, Michael Barnes QC, that the unsworn and unsubstantiated statement submitted by the Mosman cricket captain Matthew Day on Wednesday be disregarded when he deliberates over the events of the day and how the game of cricket might be made safer. Hodgkinson also insisted that the players who took the stand this week were honest witnesses.Melick had earlier questioned the veracity of the evidence submitted by players on the field that day: Brad Haddin, Doug Bollinger, Tom Cooper and David Warner. Melick stated that while words didnt kill Phillip Hughes, their denials of any sledging cast doubt on other evidence about the nature of play. Later, Melick clarified his final submission by stating that he didnt mean to suggest players had fabricated evidence.Though Melick acknowledged that the use of short-pitched bowling was a legitimate tactic, he contended that the volume of short balls bowled to Hughes, including an estimate of nine in a row in the lead-up to the ball that struck him, was going too far. These words followed on from letters from the Hughes family, which formed part of the inquest and were published on Friday in the Australian. In his letter, Greg Hughes wrote:Their tactics changed after lunch, which started to slow the run rate down, and this was by bowling short at my son for a good majority of the time. This certainly did restrict the run flow and started to change the game... The umpires did not call them no-balls under the Sheffield Shield cricket laws. Those laws are different to the MCC rules. By those balls not getting pulled up, of course this kept the bowlers continuing to target my son in an ungentlemanly way.Among other recommendations made by the Hughes family were a desire to see neck guards on the back of batting helmets made mandatory, and also the removal of any dismissals for hit wicket, should a neck guard detach from the helmet and fall onto the stumps.Stern had recommended wider first aid training, and also work towards greater clarity in signalling between players and officials on the field and medical staff off it. The fact that ambulance services had reached the scene only 20 minutes after the incident illustrated the need for this. However she also concluded that Hughes death was inevitable from the moment he was hit and should be ruled accidental. It is abundantly clear that once the tragic accident had occurred, there was nothing that could have been done to prevent Phillips death, Stern said. She also went on to say that neither the number of short balls bowled to Hughes, nor any alleged instances of sledging, had exacerbated the risk to the batsman, and submitted that no recommendations should be made over the nature of play that day.Outside court, CAs head of team performance, Pat Howard, spoke about events of the week and defended the conduct of the players who spoke at the inquest. He also stated that the games governing body would continue to offer whatever support it could to the Hughes family. This week provided a confronting reminder of the sad reality that Phillip Hughes is no longer with us, Howard said. Our thoughts continue to be with the Hughes family during what is a difficult time for them. Our thoughts are also with Phillips cricket friends and his team-mates, all of whom have had to deal with the loss of a great mate as well as the ordeal of being on the field at the time of the incident. Im very proud of the conduct of the players, the officials and staff throughout.Formal findings from the coronial inquest are set to be handed down on November 4. CLEVELAND -- The last time the baseball world caught a glimpse of Trevor Bauers mangled pinkie finger on his right hand, it was grotesquely dripping blood onto the pitching rubber in Toronto during the AL Championship Series.Unlike most horror movies, however, Bauer has no plans for a sequel. The Cleveland Indians pitcher is confident the mound will be blood free when he starts Game 2 of the World Series on Wednesday night against the Chicago Cubs. Bauer tested the finger -- notoriously hurt while he was tinkering with a drone -- during a simulated game on Monday. He wore gauze over the finger -- a no-no during an actual game -- just to see if it could withstand the pressure placed on it when Bauer grips the ball and lets it rip. When Bauer unwrapped the finger after throwing about 20 pitches, he exhaled. We took it off and it was completely white, so it was a non-issue, Bauer said. That was hardly the case in Game 3 of the ALCS, when Bauer lasted all of two outs and 21 pitches, the still fresh wound ripping open and caking Bauers jersey, pants and portions of the mound in blood. The Indians won anyway, relying on six relievers to get the final 25 outs in a 4-2 victory. Bauer is confident hell be able to carry more of a workload this time around against Chicagos Jake Arrieta.Im prepared, said Bauer, who went 12-8 with a 4.26 ERA in the regular season. Im going to go out there and execute to the best level of my ability, and its going to be what its going to be.Arrieta showed his remarkable run to the 2015 Cy Young was no fluke, though the dominance that came to him so easily last season was much more difficult to come by this summer. Wholesale NFL Jerseys. Arrieta went 18-8 with a 3.10 ERA in 2016, though he struggled at times down the stretch, posting a 5.01 ERA in his final four regular season starts. The Indians led the American League with 143 stolen bases. Opponents were safe on 23 of 26 stolen base attempts against Arrieta during the season and manager Joe Maddon is considering using Willson Contreras at catcher instead of Miguel Montero, who typically catches for Arrieta. They do run, and Willson is one of the best young throwers in the game right now, Maddon said. You have to balance out how comfortable you think Jakes going to be throwing to him versus Miggy.Contreras threw out 13 of 35 attempted base stealers during the regular season, compared to just 7 of 66 by Montero. At the end of the day, they are good as baserunners and we are good at preventing that when everything is in place, Maddon said. So we are considering that right now. ' ' '
